General Questions
What is a Level 2 electrician?
A Level 2 electrician is an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) authorised to work on the connection between a property and the electricity network, such as private power poles, overhead and underground service lines, meters and disconnections or reconnections. A standard electrician cannot do this work. Tully Electrical is Level 2 accredited (ASP 6771).
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Common signs include old ceramic fuses, no safety switches, breakers that trip often, scorch marks or a burning smell, a crowded board with no room for new circuits, or plans to add an EV charger, solar or a big appliance. We can inspect it and tell you if an upgrade is needed.
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
Usually a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor power point or light, or damaged wiring is leaking current to earth and the safety switch is doing its job. Try unplugging appliances on that circuit. If it still trips, call an electrician rather than leaving it off.
How much does an electrician cost?
It depends on the job, access and materials. For anything beyond a small repair we will look at the work and give you a written quote before we start, so there are no surprises.
Do you do residential and commercial work?
Yes. We work on homes, new builds and renovations, as well as shops, offices, gyms and strata properties across the Hawkesbury, Nepean, Western Sydney and the Lower Blue Mountains.
Level 2 and Excavation
When do I need a Level 2 electrician?
Whenever work involves the supply side of your property: a private power pole, overhead or underground service line, meter box, consumer mains, a new connection, a supply upgrade or a disconnection and reconnection.
What should I do if I receive a defect notice?
Do not ignore it. Defect notices have a deadline. Call us about the notice and we will tell you what is involved and quote to fix it.
Can you convert overhead power to underground?
Yes. We trench with our own excavator, install the conduit and underground mains, and make the connection as a Level 2 provider.
Do I need three phase power?
Possibly, if you are adding large loads such as a workshop, bore pump, big air conditioning system or a fast EV charger. We can assess your current supply and advise.

Switchboards and Safety
How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?
It depends on the number of circuits, the condition of the existing wiring, whether the meter box needs work and whether there is asbestos. We inspect the board and give you a fixed written quote.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
Most homes are done in a day, with the power off for part of it. We will tell you the timing before we start.
What is the difference between a fuse box and a switchboard?
A fuse box uses wire fuses that melt when overloaded. A modern switchboard uses circuit breakers that can be reset, plus safety switches that protect people from electric shock.
How often should safety switches be tested?
Press the test button every few months at home. Workplaces and rentals may have more formal testing requirements, which we can carry out.

Residential Electrical
Can an electrician move a power point?
Yes. Most power points can be relocated or added, including in brick walls. Access and wall type affect the cost, which we confirm in the quote.
Can you install a ceiling fan where a light is?
Usually, yes. We check the ceiling can support the fan and that the wiring is suitable, then fit the fan, with or without a light.
Do older homes need rewiring?
Not always, but old rubber or cloth insulated wiring, no earthing, or regular faults are warning signs. An inspection tells you whether repairs or a rewire is the better option.
What electrical work is needed for a kitchen renovation?
Typically new power points, dedicated circuits for the oven, cooktop and dishwasher, lighting and sometimes a switchboard upgrade. Involve us early so the wiring is planned before the walls close up.

Commercial and Strata
How often should commercial electrical systems be inspected?
It depends on the type of business and the equipment. Emergency and exit lighting, safety switches and portable appliances all have regular testing requirements under Australian Standards. We can set up a maintenance schedule to suit your site.
What is test and tag?
Test and tag is the inspection and electrical testing of portable appliances and leads, with a tag recording the test date. Workplaces use it to help meet work health and safety obligations.
Do you work with strata and property managers?
Yes. We handle maintenance requests, repairs and upgrades for strata buildings and managed properties, and keep you updated on each job.

EV Chargers, Solar and Battery
Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?
Sometimes. An EV charger needs its own circuit and space in the switchboard. Older boards, or homes already near their supply limit, may need an upgrade. We check this before quoting.
Do I need three phase power for an EV charger?
No. Most home chargers run on single phase. Three phase allows faster charging and suits larger loads, and as Level 2 providers we can upgrade your supply if you want it.
Does installing an EV charger require an electrician?
Yes. Hardwired chargers must be installed by a licensed electrician, who provides a compliance certificate for the work.
Can an EV charger work with solar panels?
Yes. Many chargers can prioritise excess solar. We can advise on a charger and setup that suits your system.
